After a nationwide search, Marian Higgins has been named the inaugural associate dean for culture, equity, and inclusion at Georgia State University’s J. Mack Robinson College of Business.
Higgins comes from the University of Georgia, where she was associate dean for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the Mary Frances Early College of Education. In that role, she developed a strategic plan for diversity and inclusive excellence while leading a 30-person committee with representation from units across the college. She created and published the college’s inaugural DEI progress report, oversaw and managed the DEI graduate certificate program, managed the Graduate Students of Color Mentoring Program, and was co-leader of the Holmes Scholars Program for doctoral students. She holds a doctorate in counseling and student personnel services from the University of Georgia.
“Beyond her professional expertise, Marian brings a valuable set of interpersonal skills for the job: she is adaptable and skilled at consensus - and relationship-building, and also conveys a sense of wisdom and deep knowledge in the areas of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging,” said Richard Philips, dean of the Robinson College.
The creation of this new position is a direct result of the work of a Robinson-led inclusion and equity task force, which recommended the college establish and empower a new leadership role to guide the community in creating an inclusive environment and positive culture where all members can learn, innovate, and thrive. Subsequently, a 10-person search committee chaired by Robinson professor Charlotte Alexander and composed of students, alumni, faculty, and staff conducted a nationwide search attracting an impressive slate of candidates. The committee unanimously recommended Higgins, who joined Robinson’s leadership team as of July 1.
"I’m thrilled to join the Robinson College community,” said Higgins. “I’m impressed with the innovative culture and genuine interest in integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of the college. The Robinson community is clearly committed to creating a more equitable and inclusive environment, and I’m excited to collaborate with students, staff, and faculty in these efforts."
