Join the Georgia State community in celebrating the achievements of Black Americans and recognizing the central role and contributions of Black people in the history of the United States.
“Black History Month - The 2021 Family Reunion: Celebrating Black Culture, Reviving Our Roots,” honors the legacies, achievements, culture and traditions of the African diaspora in the U.S., and will capture the essence of the “family reunion” through multiple events across university colleges, schools, centers and departments. GROUNDBREAKER LECTURE SERIES
Through the Groundbreaker Lecture Series, the university honors those whose actions have created and continue to create significant change in the world, while fostering conversations to address ongoing issues and potential ways to meet these challenges.
On Feb. 11, Dr. Peniel Joseph of the University of Texas-Austin will discuss his book, "The Sword and the Shield: The Revolutionary Lives of Malcom X and Martin Luther King Jr.," which reveals a more nuanced portrait of the men, who, despite markedly different backgrounds, inspired and pushed each other throughout their adult lives. THE MARIO BENNEKIN BLACK HISTORY SYMPOSIUM
The Mario Bennekin Black History Symposium is a popular annual symposium on Black history that will offer engagement and education, including virtual activities from each of Perimeter College's five campuses on Feb. 15-19. The conference was renamed to honor the late professor Mario Bennekin and will feature the 2021 theme “The Harlem Renaissance: Roots & Reach." The symposium will include a keynote address, poetry contests, student presentations, film critiques and more.
FREE PASSPORT INITIATIVE
Study Abroad Programs has launched a free passport initiative to help Georgia State students obtain their first-ever U.S. passport. When safe travel resumes, a Georgia State student with a passport will have access to infinite experiences across the globe, including study abroad. Applications will be accepted through May 24, but free passports are available only while funds last.
HONORS COLLEGE COMMITTEE FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION
The Honors College has recently formed its Committee for the Advancement of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (CADEI), which serves as the Honors College’s organizing body to ensure its practices and policies promote a diverse, inclusive and equitable community of students, staff, faculty and alumni.

GEORGIA STATE UNIVERSITY'S ROLE IN THE FUTURE OF ATLANTA - AN INTERNATIONAL CITY
The fourth dialogue of the Diversity Dialogues series took place on Thursday, Jan. 28. During this event, panelists examined Georgia State’s role in the future of Atlanta as an international city through a discussion of civil and human rights in Atlanta (and Georgia State) – past, present and future.

GEORGIA STATE ALUMNA TO PURSUE INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS AS 2021 RANGEL FELLOW
Erica Alexander, an alumna of Georgia State University who graduated in 2019 with an interdisciplinary degree in global studies, is one of 45 scholars from across the U.S. selected to receive the prestigious Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Graduate Fellowship.

HIGHLIGHTED PROGRAMS FROM THE DIVERSITY DATABASE

WomenLead
The WomenLead program seeks to close the pervasive gender equity gap by empowering women students to aim for leadership roles and to participate in civic engagement. WL offers a for-credit course and fosters outreach to the Atlanta business, government and nonprofit communities. WomenLead's core curriculum - shared by all courses (Business, Science, Policy and Politics and Innovation) - increases students' knowledge about issues affecting women and gives them tools to become tomorrow's leaders.

Panther PRIME/African American Male Initiative (AAMI)
Panther PRIME/AAMI is a partnership between the Honors College and the Office of Black Student Achievement. The partnership leverages the resources of both areas to provide African American men with identity development and experiential learning opportunities such as undergraduate research, civic engagement, study abroad and post-graduate preparation. AAMI's mission is to support and cultivate a community of scholars and develop them as leaders and change agents in their respective fields.

OPPORTUNITIES
- Equity & Inclusion in Writing Assessment - This session highlights several alternative forms of assessing student writing that are more equitable and inclusive for diverse students. During the workshop, participants will explore the advantages and complexities of assessment approaches such as contract grading, community rubric development, self-reflection/self-assessment, peer review, and ungrading. Feb. 19, 10 to 11 a.m.
- Demystifying Academic Processes Webinar- Join GSU, the Diverse Faculty Alliance, and SAGE Publishing as journal editors and publishers demystify various academic publishing processes as they demystify the academic process by discussing how to get published in an academic journal, whether an early career researcher or veteran researcher; how to promote your publications , and a discussion of impact factors. Panelists will include Karen Shrayer and Jessica Lipowski from SAGE, Dr. Dawn Rowe (editor of Teaching Exceptional Children), Dr. Norma Cuellar (editor of Journal of Transcultural Nursing) and Dr. Rich Milner (editor of Urban Education). February 22, 3 to 4 p.m.
- The Multicultural Academic Opportunities Program: Undergraduate Summer Research Internship (MAOP - SRI) - The purpose of MAOP - SRI is to provide undergraduates from diverse backgrounds an opportunity to conduct research on campus and to educate participants about graduate education. Students from a wide variety of academic disciplines spend ten weeks at Virginia Tech during the summer, working closely with a faculty mentor in a mentor/protege relationship to design, conduct and present a scholarly research presentation. Deadline - Feb. 22 @ 5pm
