Typing Non-English Letters/Characters With Accents/Diacriticals on U.S. English Computer Keyboards
Muhlenberg College
Washington State University

The following tip sheets and guides provide information on how users of U.S. English computer keyboards can type characters with accents (diacriticals) not used in the English language.
Guides are provided below:
- Information on how to install a keyboard layout of a different language on your Mac or Windows Computer, including languages which do not use Latin/Roman letters (Arabic, Chinese, Korean, etc.)
- Shortcuts on how to quickly type characters that have accents in languages which use Latin/Roman characters (Spanish, French, German, etc.; PDF format)
Additional guidance documents and sites are welcome - please use the DEI Resource Library contact form at this link to share them. Guidance should only come from other educational institutions with .edu websites, or directly from device/OS manufacturers.
In general, on mobile devices, regardless of Android or iOS, press and hold down the character; you should see multiple options for different accents/diacritical marks.
